In Year 10, it’s time to start considering your plans for after Year 11 and preparing to make applications. Employers look for candidates with specific skills and qualities, often referred to as transferable skills, which are essential for most jobs. These include a willingness to learn and good communication skills.

Recent research has identified the top six transferable skills that employers seek, both now and in 2035. Despite potential changes in job types, these skills remain crucial for success in any career.

Understanding Skills and Qualities

Skills: Abilities you can do or learn to do. Think of them as “I can do…”

Skills and Qualities for Apprenticeships
When exploring job and apprenticeship vacancies, employers list the skills and qualities they desire. Ask friends for a few positive words to describe you—these can highlight unique traits that make you a strong candidate, such as punctuality, friendliness, or caring nature.

Creating a CV
Understanding your skills and qualities is crucial for applications to jobs, apprenticeships, or courses. Sixth forms, colleges, and universities also want to know about your skills, especially for practical or research-intensive subjects. A CV is a great way to document your skills and experiences, useful for both job and course applications.

Post-16 Options
It’s never too early to think about your post-16 options. Applications for post-16 courses start in the autumn term of Year 11, with some deadlines as early as December. Consider whether full-time study or an apprenticeship suits you best.

Considering University
Have you thought about going to university at 18+? Whether full-time or through a higher or degree apprenticeship, it’s important to know enough about university to make an informed decision. Choosing the right subjects in college or sixth form is crucial for certain university courses.
